ABOUT PARTICIPATING IN THE SHOWS: The Good Company Players produce musicals in Roger Rocka's Dinner Theater, 6 shows a year, with runs of 8-9 weeks. Shows play Wednesday - Sunday night, plus Sunday matinees. Good Company also produces 6 plays annually at their own 2nd Space Theatre. These shows also run 8-9 weeks, with performances Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and a Sunday matinee. REHEARSALS at Roger Rocka's: usually go 6 weeks, Monday-Friday, starting at 6 p.m. Longer rehearsals are held on Monday and Tuesday night, shorter rehearsals Wednesday - Friday. 2nd Space shows generally rehearse for 5 weeks, 6-10 p.m. Monday-Wednesday, with shorter rehearsals Thursday and Friday. Variations on this schedule are at the discretion of the individual director.

BEFORE THE AUDITION: GCP has scripts available for 3-day checkout 6 weeks prior to the audition up till the week of the audition. Scripts can be checked out at GCP's Business Office, 1105 N. Wishon; the week leading up to the audition, scripts can be read in the office. Office Hours: 9:30-5:30, Tuesday-Friday.

AT THE AUDITION: You'll receive a fact sheet with dates and times of the shows' commitment, and an audition form to fill out .We urge auditioners to look at the time commitment carefully and to let us know of any conflicts they have. Ideally, the people who work with us participate in all performances (see exceptions below). We can accommodate some rehearsals conflicts, but too many can affect casting.

MUSICAL AUDITIONS: Auditioners are asked to sing a prepared (i.e., memorized) song. A show tune is preferable to a pop tune, but you don't have to sing a song from the show for which you are trying out. Please bring sheet music in the correct key with you. We provide a piano player; we do need to hear you sing with the piano. There is also a dance audition, for which no preparation is needed: Our choreographer teaches a dance or dances to you as part of a group, which you then are asked to perform, again in a group setting. You will also usually be given material from the play(s) to read. Even if you are interested in "Chorus Only" or "Sing Only" or "Dance Only", we ask everyone to complete ALL parts of the audition.

AUDITIONS FOR NON-MUSICALS: If you are trying out for a 2nd Space show, you will be asked to read a scene or scenes from the play. The scenes are assigned after you turn in your auditions form and the directors have had a chance to look at the various physical types, etc., for match-ups in the scenes.

JUNIOR COMPANY AUDITIONS: Exactly the same as the auditions described above for musicals, but no readings are required.

We audition 2 shows at a time; You are welcome to try out for both shows or just one.

CALLBACKS: Are usually held the Monday and Tuesday night following the Saturday audition. You will be told if you are called back before you leave the theater on Saturday. Callbacks may consist of further reading, singing or dancing.

IF YOU CAN'T ATTEND THE SATURDAY AUDITION: Appointments to be seen at Callbacks must be made prior to the Saturday audition. Only a limited number of people will be seen in this manner, and the director has the right to decide against seeing any new people at Callbacks once the Saturday audition is over. While every attempt is made to cast from the original audition pool, directors may feel they need further options. Additional performers may be asked to come in to Callbacks for this purpose. All performers at the Callback are given an equal opportunity to be cast.

CASTING NOTIFICATION: After both Callbacks, you'll be called if cast, sent a letter if you're not. The cast list is posted at the Business Office after all calls are made.

CASTING POLICIES 2003

UNDERSTUDIES, ALTERNATES, DOUBLE-CASTING: UNDERSTUDIES may be in the cast or outside the cast. They are expected to be totally prepared to cover a role or roles as needed. "Out-of-cast" understudies work out a rehearsal schedule with the director and stage manager; they are expected to be fully prepared to perform if needed and to see the show enough times after it opens to note changes. If all goes well, understudies never perform. ALTERNATES: If the audition pool allows, alternates, or "swings" may be selected to support ensemble singing and dancing roles. Unlike understudies, alternates may be scheduled to perform at the director's discretion. DOUBLE-CASTING: In some rare instances, the audition pool allows a director to double-cast certain roles. This is most often done with young people's roles, or with a particularly demanding adult role, or to give performance opportunities to more than one equally talented performer. Variations of double-casting might include doubling a role (two performers alternate as assigned before the run begins), or a split role (one performer takes part of a run and another plays the rest of the run, again, as arranged with advance commitment to the performance dates).
If you have specific conflicts, we urge you to audition and indicate your desire to take advantage of one of these special casting options. This would also be a possibility for those of you interested in crew work. We would like to be able to involve people who may stay away because of the challenges of a long run or concerns about specific coverage needs.

PRE-CASTING: Shows are not pre-cast, and no director who works with GCP can commit to a casting decision prior to auditions & callbacks.

WE WANT YOU TO SUCCEED: Not everyone is right for every show; try out again if you aren't cast the first time you audition.

WE KNOW YOU MAY COME INTO THE AUDITION WITH PREFERENCES FOR PARTICULAR ROLES: If you are only interested in one part, please let us know at the time of the audition.

Attitude and work habits are as important to us in the casting process as talent.

Good Company Players is an amateur theater company which produces plays in both The 2nd Space Theatre and at Roger Rocka's Dinner Theater. Any member of the community is welcome to audition for all roles in all shows. Performers and crew members are volunteers seeking training and/or a recreational outlet. GCP makes an effort to defray the expenses of performers and crews with a nominal expense reimbursement, issued at the end of the show's run, but no volunteers are paid to participate.

IF YOU HAVE INTEREST IN WORKING WITH GCP AS A STAGE MANAGER, OR ON THE CREW ON ANY OF OUR SHOWS, CALL OUR BUSINESS OFFICE. WE ARE AT 1105 N. WISHON TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY, 10-5:30. CALL US AT 266-0211.
